Effects of tanning beds

It is important to recognize and be aware of the effects of tanning beds on your skin and your health. The use of tanning beds to achieve a natural looking tan without the need for lying out on the beach continues to be one of the most popular methods of tanning out there today.

Even though tanning beds help people avoid sun bathing, this alternative doesn't make it any safer. Tanning beds still use UVB and UVA rays in order to produce a tanned appearance and the dosages can be harmful to the skin, especially for individuals that make indoor tanning a frequent pastime.

The use of tanning beds can result in premature aging in the form of fine lines and wrinkles and even sunburn. Just as being under the sun too long can cause sunburn, lying in a tanning bed for a long period of time can still do quite a bit of damage to the skin and your complexion. Unfortunately, many people believe that the longer they stay in the tanning bed, the more quickly they will tan, thus avoiding the need to go back again. This couldn't be more wrong. Individuals that plan on using a tanning bed should not only limit the amount of time spent in the tanning bed, but also the number of times they go tanning at the salon.

The use of tanning beds also include the health of your eyes. The intense rays emitted are strong enough to cause severe eye injury to the retina, cornea, and can even cause cataracts. Flash burns and keratitis (an eye infection caused by a fungus) are conditions that have also been linked to prolonged exposure to such radiation.

While getting a great tan is desirable and popular, it isn't worth the risks associated with the effects of tanning beds. Only by educating yourself about the process and what it entails will you be able to make the best decision for your tanning needs. If tanning beds don't appeal to you, there are plenty of sunless tanning products available that will allow you to get a tan without putting your skin in contact with harmful ultraviolet rays.
