Natural sunscreens

Many people are now turning to natural sunscreens due to the fact that many use ingredients that are natural and organic. Over the past few years, there have been many medical studies done on the safety of certain sunscreens. Some studies have found certain ingredients to be potentially harmful to humans, which begs the question: which sunscreens are safe for you and your family?

The good news is that there are now many other types of sunscreens out there that seek to use safer ingredients and other alternatives to avoid future health risks. Most consumers translate words like “organic” and “natural” to mean “safer” than traditional ingredients found on the label. 'Scientific-looking' ingredients tend to make consumers hesitate due to the fact that most people can't even pronounce the names, let alone understand what they are and how they affect the skin.

Medical studies have found the following commonly used sunscreen ingredients to be potentially harmful because they act as endocrine disrupters, which means that these ingredients trick the body into treating them as natural hormones, leading to possible reproductive problems...

  • Homosalate
  • Octyl-dimenthyl-PABA
  • Parabens
  • Benzophenone-3
  • Butyl-methoxydibenzoylmethane
  • Octyl-methoxycinnamate
  • 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor

Because of findings such as these, consumers are now putting their trust in sunscreens with natural ingredients that are free of harsh chemicals. Such products make use of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in place of traditional ingredients, and also block against both UVA and UVB rays.

Many brands of natural sunscreens also include the use of extracts and antioxidants that provide great benefits to the health of the skin, in addition to keeping it safe from sun damage. Grapeseed extract, minerals, green tea, grapeseed oil, and cocoa butter are a few of the many natural ingredients that give these sunscreens an advantage over the competition. Parents of children are especially found of these products, since the ingredients and formulas are meant to be gentle on sensitive skin.

You can search for special natural sunscreens online or at your local store. If you have any questions about what type of sunscreen would be best for you or your family, you can talk to your doctor or dermatologist or explore this website.
