Sun protection clothing

In addition to using sunscreen or sunblock, you now also have the option of sun protection clothing. When it comes to keeping yourself safe from sun damage, you can never have too much sun protection. This type of sun protection is ideal for when you're out and about on sunny days and not just frolicking on the beach or hanging out by the pool.

This type of clothing is important because the sun's ultraviolet rays can quickly target bare arms, hands, legs, feet and even your scalp. Anytime you plan on stepping out into the sun, make sure you wear clothing that will cover your body and protect against the sun. Examples of such clothing items include long pants, long-sleeved shirts, hats and close-toed shoes. Did you know that being out in the sun for a certain period of time without a hat can put your scalp at risk for sunburn? It's true and what a painful and uncomfortable place to experience sunburn! It is vital that young children wear sun protection clothing as well. Children and young babies are more prone to the damaging effects of the sun because their skin is much thinner and sensitive. Even if you plan on going to the beach or the pool, deck your kids out in long pants, socks and shoes, a long-sleeved top and a hat. If it's too hot and your child wants to wear shorts and a t-shirt, make sure that any area of their skin that is exposed is covered adequately with sunscreen or sunblock. The same goes for adults.

While regular clothing offers its own amount of protection from the sun, there is special sun protection clothing that is specially made to ward off the UV rays. This type of protective clothing is made of darker and tightly knitted fabrics that effectively block out any ultraviolet rays from coming through your clothing and onto your skin. Clothing of this caliber is labeled with a UPF rating, which stands for “ultraviolet protection factor,” and is represented by a number like SPF on sun care products. You can find websites for specialty stores that offer these types of garments and are designed for daily wear, sporting events, and summertime fun, such as swimwear and beachwear.
