Sunlight
We've been told so many things about sunlight, especially when it comes to sun care and protecting ourselves from dangerous UV rays. But there is more to the subject and, perhaps surprisingly, it isn't all negative.
It's no secret that excessive exposure to the rays of the sun without sunscreen or sun block can result in premature aging and can even put you at risk for developing skin cancer. But despite the bad press sun and its rays attract, there are many ways that they are beneficial to human health.
Did you know that the sun is the best source of vitamin D? It's true. More specifically, UVB rays are responsible for providing vitamin D to humans but only a small amount is necessary. The best time to get a dose of vitamin D is during the summer month in the middle of the day. Just being in the sun without sunscreen or sunblock for 10-15 minutes can give you a whole day's worth of vitamin D.
So what makes vitamin D so important that you can turn to the sun for a healthy dose? For one, vitamin D works to absorb calcium, maintain normal blood levels, and strengthen the teeth and bones.
However, just as the suns rays can be helpful to the human body, for some it can be dangerous. Photosensitivity is an actual condition that causes a person to become allergic to them. Any direct exposure can cause rashes, blisters, and other unsightly skin problems. Those who suffer from photosensitivity are encouraged to stay out of both natural sunlight and certain types of artificial lights. Special light bulbs are used indoors and sunblock or sunscreen is a must for those who are allergic.
The sun can affect us in many different ways but as long as you understand how sunlight works as well as the advantages and disadvantages, you shouldn't have any reason to fear stepping outside.
